Oysters are Forever, 2022
Oysters are Forever is a project of oyster shaped design modules. Manufactured by Sydney based Defy Design who are leaders in the precious plastics movement - the project seeks to address plastic waste in the ocean by using 100% post-consumer-plastic as the material for the shell. Of all shells, the oyster has been chosen, for its powerful filtration capabilities that naturally work to cleanse the sea. The scale of a bowl has been chosen as sharing food is a joyful way to bring people together and discuss. The shell form is based on a real oyster shell from a dinner party held last year, that has been 3D scanned and manipulated digitally to function as an object.
Manufacturing Process (with Defy Design)
Milk bottles are collected and cleaned.
The waste plastic is shredded.
Shredded plastic is fed into the injection moulder.
A two part mould was made for the injection moulder.
The shells are finished by hand.
Each module is made from 100% post-consumer-plastic (milk bottles).
